The newest collections for AW 2012 are in full swing, with a number of online and high street retailers already previewing (and even starting to sell) their autumn collections. But which trends for AW 2012 are best for women with curves or larger busts?

If you choose the right fit, then whatever your shape or size, you can wear any trend! But one trend we think looks particularly good on women with bigger busts is the military trend, characterised by rich shades of khaki, olive and chocolate and a huge array of fabrics including chiffon, wool, leather, jersey and even some luxurious fabrics like fine cashmere.

Although military style might first appear to be a little too mannish for curvy women, this season there are some fabulous details that make this a perfect trend for hourglass and pear-shaped figures. Double-breasted coats with nipped in waists and flared skirts really accentuate a curvy figure, while large, feature collars help frame your face and hair while at the same time flattering a large bust.

Some of the military styles in AW 2012 look set to be baggy and unstructured; while these look great on catwalk models, they can drown curvy women and make you look bigger than you are. Instead, opt for fitted jumpers or shirts in olive, khaki and bottle green, as well as tailored trousers in similar shades. An army-coloured pencil skirt would make a great addition to a workwear wardrobe, or opt for accessories with gold hardware for a military twist on the classic handbag.

Even if you don’t fancy a full military makeover, picking some key pieces from the trend will help liven up your style for AW 2012. Here are our top military-inspired picks for curvy women:

  • A chunky black or brown leather belt with feature buckle
  • A tailored workwear set: olive pencil skirt and matching jacket with nipped in waist
  • Double breasted wool coat with large feature collar
  • Brown leather shoulder bag with gold hardware
  • Chunky ankle boots for off-duty style!
