We all know that wearing the right bra for your shape and size can make a world of difference to how your clothes look – and how you feel too! But so many women wear the wrong size bra (especially if they wear a larger cup size) without realised exactly the damage it can cause to your body.
If you’re wearing the wrong size bra, you might feel uncomfortable – that niggling sensation at your back, on the straps, or between the cups. But you might actually be suffering from further pains that we don’t always realise are connected with what size bra we’re wearing.

The whole point of your bra is that it’s designed to support your breasts – if your bra isn’t doing its job, your back, neck and shoulders will have to instead. This strain on your muscles can cause neck, shoulder and back ache, and can dramatically affect your posture. If the cups of your bra aren’t sufficiently surrounding and comfortably encasing both of your breasts, it can lead to serious and irreversible damage to the breast tissue – not only does lead to sagging, but also to pain across your chest area. And if the cups are too large, or the band too tight, underwiring can dig in (we all know that sensation) which can cause an uncomfortable feeling and skin irritation.
Another example of the damage ill-fitting bras can cause is if the bra is too small in the cup; you might find that your breasts are bulging out of the side or top of the bra and that your chest feels restricted. While we all love having a fabulous cleavage – especially if we’ve got a fabulous dress to match – wearing a bra that is too small in order to push your breasts up and together is not the solution! Instead, opt for a correctly-fitting plunge bra that gives you all the support you need and the look you want.
We don’t always know if we’re wearing the right size bra, especially as there seems to be so much different between manufacturers and even different styles of bra. The most important thing to do is always get your bra size properly measured, or use bra fitting advice to help. Sometimes, though, we don’t realise a bra can be uncomfortable until we’ve worn it and washed it a few times, and discover that our shoulders or neck are hurting slightly. If you suffer from shoulder, neck or back pain, then it’s essential you check your bra is fitting properly, especially if you’ve had the bra for a while.
The most important thing to remember is that your bra should feel comfortable and supportive when you’re wearing it. If your bra is hurting you, it’s not going to making you feel confident or help you look your best – so get it fitted correctly, banish those painful bras and feel like a new woman.
