Choosing the right maternity bra

Trying to find the right bra while you’re pregnant may seem impossible. Your breasts will be changing size and shape regularly and may be sore throughout various stages of your pregnancy, so it’s important that you choose the right bra for comfort and support.

You may find your usual bras start to become too small around eight to ten weeks of pregnancy as your body prepares for breast feeding, so ensure that your bra fastens comfortably on to the first row of eyes, to leave room for your ribcage to widen in the upcoming stages of your pregnancy.

What to look for

When choosing a maternity bra, it’s important to look for bras that offer additional support, such as wide straps and sides and an under-bust band.

As your breasts will change size and shape throughout the pregnancy, choose a bra with a minimum of four rows of fasteners, as this will allow you to adjust your bra to a more comfortable fit throughout different stages.

It’s important to be as comfortable as possible during your pregnancy, so we recommend looking for bras that are mainly cotton, which lets your skin breathe easily if you are too hot. Late in pregnancy, you should buy a bra that fastens comfortably on to one of the last rows of eyes. This is because your ribcage will reduce in size after your baby’s birth.

What to avoid

Many health professionals recommend avoiding underwired bras during pregnancy. This is because your breasts will grow and change shape, and the surrounding skin and tissue will begin to stretch to accommodate the extra weight; without adequate support this could cause tension and discomfort in your back, neck and shoulders. Underwired bras do not expand to accommodate your changing shape and therefore are more likely to interfere with these natural changes which could result in obstructing the increased blood flow and compressing the developing milk ducts.

Comfort is the most important factor during pregnancy and a good maternity bra will give you the support you need without feeling restrictive or causing discomfort.  Make sure there is between a half and a full cups worth of growing room when you buy a new maternity bra. You can check this by placing your hand inside the cup when you try it on and make sure it gives.
