The summer is the perfect time to relax and unwind with a good book either on holiday on the beach or at home in the garden.
With hundreds of new books hitting the shelves recently, we’ve read and reviewed our top five our summer reads.
1. Funny Girl by Nick Hornby
Following Nick Hornby’s About a Boy, High Fidelity and An Education, Hornby returns with another instant classic. Set in the 1960s, the story follows Sophie Straw as she turns from an innocent girl to television star through this endearing yet comedic novel. Funny Girl lives up to Hornby’s previous best sellers
2. Go Set a Watchman by Harper Lee
Harper Lee returns with ‘Go Set a Watchman’, one of the world’s most anticipated works since the final Harry Potter. The novel is set 20 years after ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ and follows an adult Scott Finch as she struggles to understand her father’s attitude towards society along with her feelings on her upbringing and place she once lived. The book also includes many of the original characters from ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’.
3. The Vacationers by Emma Straub
Franny and Jim Post head to Mallorca with their extended family to celebrate their thirty-fifth wedding anniversary and their daughters graduation. However things are not what they seem as secrets start to become exposed over the course of the holiday after mounting tension home in Manhattan, a thriller for sure.
4. Yes Please by Amy Poehler
One of the most hilarious comediennes of our time, Amy Poehler, has debuted her biography ‘Yes Please!’ Humorous and smart, this life story is both visceral and honest, providing an insight to the woman behind those hilarious one-liners. This is a great read for the beach and ultimately leaves you feeling inspired.
4. Killing Monica by Candace Bushnell
If you love Sex and the City then you will love ‘Killing Monica’ the newest book from Candace Bushnell. The story is about an author named Pandy ‘PJ’ Willis who writes the successful Monica book series, which have been turned into motion pictures. However when Pandy suggests writing an historical book, her publishers aren’t pleased so when her boathouse goes up in flames, she sees an escape route and chance to re-invent herself. Humorous and stylish, this is a sharp summer read.
