Raise a hand if you listed ‘exercise’ as one of your New Year resolutions earlier this month…and raise another if you’ve managed to stick to a regular workout routine so far. If you’ve currently got both hands in the air, wave them round like you just don’t care because we’re very proud of you! Getting in gear after Christmas, when most of us are suffering from January blues and selection box withdrawal, isn’t easy.
If you started off with the best intentions, but haven’t quite managed to get your exercise regime (or your feet) off the ground, fear not; it’s never too late to start over. What’s more, you’re not alone. There are thousands of people out there who are struggling to kick start their exercise plan and, chances are, you’ve got a friend in the same boat.
So, to make the transition into training that little bit easier, why not buddy up and see that resolution through together? According to research, 80% of people think they’re more likely to stick to their routines if they’re working out with a friend and women were even found to lose a third more weight! So pick a partner and take a look at our top five workouts that are better together.
Oh, and you can all put your hands down now…
Hiking
There’s nothing quite like getting out and about in the great outdoors. Okay, it may not be the most appealing of activities when it’s pouring down with rain and the winds are howling but, in the right conditions, taking a hike with your gal pals is a great way to get your blood pumping while catching up on all the latest goss.
Yoga
Yoga classes have sprung up in most cities and towns, offering a great way to get fit while unwinding. Studio classes are generally quiet affairs but there’s no reason why yoga can’t be fun and giggly too. Providing one of you has some knowledge of the stretches and poses, why not grab your mat and your mate and DIY a class?
Rock climbing
For an activity that will burn calories while bringing you closer to your friend, look to rock climbing. A true partner sport, rock climbing depends on trust and communication between you and your partner. Find a class or a local climbing wall and rope in a playmate to this adrenalin-fuelled fun.
Cycling
Whether you like extreme mountain-biking, riding dirty in the countryside or leisurely cruising by the beach, getting on your bike is a great way to get in shape. Cycling uses every part of the body and, with friends in tow, is sure to give your mouth a good workout too. Decide what kind of ride suits you all best, plan your route and get peddling!
Dance class
Remember that Single Ladies dance routine you learnt for your mates hen do? Well, imagine having that much fun every week. Get as many of your girlfriends together, head down to your local dance class and salsa/tap/hip hop/burlesque your way to a healthier, happier you.
