What comes to mind when you hear about ‘Vintage Fashion’ do you think 1920’s flapper style or 1940 natural shapes and shades? What about if we told you that the shelves of the high street 2013 are going to be full of 1950’s style including screen prints mixed with a re-introduction of the pencil skirt – would that thrill you?

The 1950’s brought about a change not only in Britain as a country but also sparked a significant change in the ways that clothes were created; gone were the days of clothing rations and rapidly skirts and dresses were being designed with vast amounts of material, incorporating detailed pleating and the resurgence of much more voluminous shapes seen pre-war.

The likes of Valentino, Christopher Kane and Dolce & Gabbana created beautiful pieces that echo the fit and flare of the post clothing ration styles seen throughout Britain in the 1950’s. Just as they were then, they are incredibly flattering to all body types; the waist is defined and the full skirt offers those less thrilled by their mid-section and thighs the perfect disguise. The structured fit also creates curves on even the most athletic of bodies.

Not shy of Pattern? Then the revival of 1950’s floral print will suit you down to the ground. Erdem and Stella McCartney both showed bold colours on the catwalk offering a hint of summer on even the darkest of days, teamed in the winter with opaque tights and a tight cardigan you can really channel your inner Audrey Hepburn.

A great tip to remember is, the bigger the print the more slimming it is, so if you are a little nervous of print go for large print, made up of similar shades and tones. If however, you are a print trailblazer then go for the bold print colour clashes and geometric shapes. To add a modern twist to this classic trend add a leather biker jacket and statement boots for day wear as seen on the likes of Taylor Swift and Fearne Cotton; for a more elegant look team with timeless nude heels and an embellished clutch.
